Wilderness Rescue Training for Land and Water Guardians

As guardians, you’re on the land and water for patrols, projects, cultural activities, and emergencies.

Wilderness rescue training is an important tool of sovereignty, safety, and capacity building. We offer courses in wilderness medicine, water rescue (whitewater, swiftwater, lakes, and coastline), and ice safety and rescue. These courses are a practical, culturally respectful way to keep Guardians, community members, and visitors safe while supporting Indigenous-led stewardship.

Benefits of wilderness rescue training

  • Gain the skills to manage and prevent emergencies on land-based programs
  • Build long-term capacity within the Nation
  • Support youth training and career growth in conservation, tourism, emergency response, and land management
  • Reinforce safety protocols and support the development of Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas
  • Strengthen funding proposals with recognized, international safety certifications
  • Enhance visitor safety and risk management

Safety and rescue courses

Wilderness medicine

Wilderness medicine is for those who travel hours away from help with limited resources. It gives Guardians the skills to respond confidently to injuries, environmental hazards, and emergencies in remote areas. See all wilderness medicine courses

Ice Safety and rescue

With ice safety and rescue training you’ll gain knowledge and learn how to assess ice conditions, so you can make good decisions and travel safely on the ice. You’ll get hands-on practice and experience with self-rescue and rescuing others who fall through the ice. See all ice safety and rescue courses

Whitewater and swiftwater

You’ll gain tools for all types of whitewater rescues, from easy rapids to harder water and more complex situations. You’ll become competent at performing effective rescues with limited resources—and making smart decisions when river running. See all whitewater and swiftwater courses

Why Train with Boreal River Rescue

All of our training is hands-on, outdoors, and tailored to the realities Guardians face in their environment.

As Guardians, you carry deep land knowledge. Our approach is collaborative: we bring medical and safety expertise, and you bring cultural and territorial knowledge.

The courses can be delivered on the Nation’s land, adapted to local terrain, wildlife, weather, and community needs. Guardians learn in the same forests, rivers, coasts, and trails where they work every day.

You’ll be equipped with the practical, water, ice, land-based emergency skills you need to keep people safe, strengthen Indigenous stewardship, and build long-term community capacity.
